A military junta is government by a committee of military leaders. The term derives from the Spanishjunta meaning committee, specifically a board of directors. It originally referred to an executive body that came to power after a military coup in 20th century Latin America. Often it becomes a military dictatorship, though the terms are not synonymous. In the history of Spain, junta was the name chosen by several local administrations forming in Spain during the Peninsula War as a patriotic alternative to the official administration topped by the French invaders.
