The Croatian military budget was approximately USD 1.1 billion in 1997 (a little more than 5% of GDP), but it has since been reduced significantly (USD 520 million or 2.39% of GDP in 2002) and further reduced in 2003 (2.2% of GDP). Croatian defence budget for 2007 was 4,420 million Kuna (HRK) or 840 million USD, at present exchange rate this represented 1.74% of GDP which was an increase from 2006 budget which stood at 754 million USD or 1.72% of GDP. Croatian defence expenditure will rise as a result of NATO membership in which Croatia hopes to become a member in 2008. Expenditures for that year is set to be 5,240 million(HRK) which is about 1 billion U$. The increase in spending is being attributed to the fact that Croatia is introducing a completely professional force from January 2008. Additional funds from central state budget are being allocated for procurements of new APCs, new helicopters, firefighting aircraft, patrol ships as well as other major defense programs.
