Once a model for the entire Asian continent and feared and envied by its Southeast Asian neighbors, particularly during the 1950s and 60s, the Armed Forces of the Philippines has since been surpassed by all other armed forces in the region and now is one of the weakest, most underfunded, most antiquated, and most politicized. The Philippine Revolution, the first against western colonial rule in Asia, was directed against Spain which had colonized the Philippines since 1565.
The most important event which possibly made the Revolution inevitable was that of February 17, 1872, when three Filipino secular priests, leaders in the movement for the secularization (in effect, nationalization) of Philippine parishes, were executed publicly by garrote for their supposed complicity in a military mutiny at a Cavite arsenal on January 20, 1872.
The Philippine Constabulary and the Philippine Department's Philippine Scouts were used to create the core of the new Philippine Army.
