Millennium Chemicals Inc is a U.S. based chemical company.
The business was established in 1985. It was a subsidiary of British conglomerate Hanson plc at one time, but was demerged on 1 October 1996, when it became an independent listed company. It was taken over by Lyondell Chemical on 30 November 2004, but continues to exist as a division and trading name of Lyondell. It is an important chemical reagent and industrial chemical that is used in the production of polyethylene terephthalate mainly in soft drink bottles; cellulose acetate, mainly for photographic film; and polyvinyl acetate for wood glue, as well as many synthetic fibres and fabrics.
In either case, the Ac is not to be confused with the abbreviation for the chemical element actinium.
Acetic acid undergoes the typical chemical reactions of a carboxylic acid, notably the formation of ethanol by reduction, and formation of derivatives such as acetyl chloride via nucleophilic acyl substitution.
