He persuaded the New South Wales legislature to pass an Act on 27 July 1852 requiring all railways in the colony to be of 5 feet 3 inch gauge.
The line was extended to the Sydney Harbour foreshore at old Milsons Point station in 1893, where it connected to a ferry to Central Sydney.
When the Bridge and the new underground railway to Central opened in 1932, it and the nearby Lavender Bay station were replaced by the current Milsons Point station and North Sydney station.

Crows Nest is a suburb approximately five kilometres north of downtown Sydney, New South Wales, on the lower North Shore.
Today the suburb houses a significant commercial district—noted for its varied shops and restaurants—located at the junction of five main roads on the highest point of elevation in Crows Nest, about 1km north by northwest of the original site of Crows Nest House.
The gates of Crows Nest House still stand at the Pacific Highway entrance to North Sydney Demonstration School.
