Mina is a town located in Chautauqua County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,176.


The Town of Mina was incorporated in 1824 and is at the western county border.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.0 km˛ (36.3 mi˛). 92.9 km˛ (35.9 mi˛) of it is land and 1.1 km˛ (0.4 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.21% water.


The Town of Mina borders Erie County, Pennsylvania on the west.


Interstate highway 86 passes through the north part of the town.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,176 people, 456 households, and 336 families residing in the town. The population density is 12.7/km˛ (32.8/mi˛). There are 750 housing units at an average density of 8.1/km˛ (20.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 98.13% White, 0.26% African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. 0.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 456 households out of which 28.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.7% are married couples living together, 3.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% are non-families. 23.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 2.99.


In the town the population is spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 100.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.0 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $40,139, and the median income for a family is $45,074. Males have a median income of $32,391 versus $22,404 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,240. 9.3% of the population and 6.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.4% of those under the age of 18 and 7.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
