Encyclopedia > Minato Mirai Line

The Yokohama High-Speed Railway Minato Mirai 21 Line (横浜高速鉄道みなとみらい21線), commonly known as the Minato Mirai Line (みなとみらい線), is a 4.1-km, 6-station subway line connecting Yokohama station to Yokohama's Chinatown through the Minato Mirai 21 development.

Unlike other Yokohama Subway lines, the Minato Mirai Line was built by a consortium of Yokohama city, Kanagawa prefecture and the Tokyo Kyuko Electric Railway. Construction of the line started in 1993, but due to the need to extensively rework Yokohama station and other difficulties it took 11 years and 260 billion yen (2.5 billion USD) to complete the line. The line was finally opened to the public on February 1, 2004.

Fares on the line range from ¥180 to ¥200. Tokyu Toyoko Line trains from Shibuya, Tokyo run through on the Minato Mirai Line. A limited express train from Shibuya to Chinatown takes 35 minutes.
