Minehunters are mine countermeasure vessels that actively detect and destroy individual naval mines. Minesweepers, on the other hand, clears mined areas as a whole, without prior detection of mines. A vessel that combines both of these roles is known as an MCMV, (also for mine countermeasure vessel). A minehunter uses an imaging sonar to detect and classify targets and then sends out divers or remotely operated vehicles to inspect and neutralise the threat, often using small charges that are detonated remotely. The F70 type frigates (here, La Motte-Picquet) are fitted with VDS (Variable Depth Sonar) type DUBV43 or DUBV43C towed sonars SONAR (SOund Navigation And Ranging) â€” or sonar â€” is a technique that uses sound propagation under water (primarily) to navigate, communicate or to detect other vessels. ... Variety of ROVs: Work Class, General, Mini Remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) is the common accepted name for tethered underwater robots in the offshore industry. ... This article is concerned solely with chemical explosives. ...

As the minehunter will often be operating in close proximity to mines, it is so designed to reduce its acoustic and magnetic signatures, two common forms of trigger for mines. For example, they are often soundproofed by mounting machinery on shock absorbers or by using quiet electrical drive and are generally constructed using wood, glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) and non-ferrous metal, or are degaussed, to reduce magnetic signature. Acoustics is a branch of physics and is the study of sound (mechanical waves in gases, liquids, and solids). ... It has been suggested that this article or section be merged with magnet. ... Minehunters are generally small, shallow-draught vessels, as they are often called upon to work in enclosed bodies of water such as shipping channels or harbours. Manoeuvrability in such areas is critical, therefore the Voith-Schneider cycloidal propulsor is commonly used, allowing the engine thrust to be transmitted in any direction. A number of modern vessels use catamaran hulls to provide a large, stable working platform with minimal underwater contact; this both reduces draught whilst lowering acoustic transmission and reducing the fluid pressure generated by the moving hull (mines may incorporate a hydraulic pressure trigger). The draft of a ships hull is the vertical distance from the bottom of the hull to the waterline. ... In physical geography, a channel is the physical confine of a river or slough, consisting of a bed and banks. ... A harbor (or harbour) or haven is a place where ships may shelter from the weather or are stored. ... The Voith-Schneider propeller is a specialized marine propulsion system. ... It has been suggested that Catamaran History be merged into this article or section. ... Naval Technology - Osprey Class - Coastal Minehunter (823 words)
The mission of the ships is to clear coastal and ocean waters, shore areas, and harbours of pressure/contact, acoustic, and magnetic mines using reconnaissance, classification and neutralisation.
In June 2006, four Osprey Class minehunters USS Osprey (MHC 51), USS Robin (MHC 54), USS Falcon (MHC 59) and USS Oriole (MHC 55) were decommissioned.
The AN/SQQ-32 is a variable depth minehunting sonar system for the detection and classification of mines, and is deployed by winch from a well in front of the bridge.
Minehunter Project - 17/09/1996 - PRIV - NSW Parliament (911 words)
The fact that the laying of the third keel is on time and within budget is an indication of the dedication of both the workers and management at ADI and shows the advances in ship design and technology carried out on that site.
When ADI made the decision to be one of the three tenderers for the minehunter project, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Merv Church, the program manager, and Mr Ken Harris, the managing director.
The mould for the first minehunter was prepared and constructed in Italy to give our workers the opportunity to learn the skills.
