The Minister said that she impressed on Mr Lamy her view that, from an Irish perspective, any new WTO agreement must be accommodated within the terms of the recent CAP reforms and that further reform must not be forced by the outcome of a new agreement.
She added that it would be unacceptable were agriculture to be sacrificed for the sake of an overall agreement and that farmers and the agri-food sector in Ireland and the EU should not be asked to bear a disproportionate burden under a new round.
Minister Coughlan said that Market Access is the crucial element in the negotiations and she is extremely concerned that the scale of the tariff cuts which the EU has offered.
