The Secretary of State for Employment was a UK cabinet position. In 1995 it was merged with Secretary of State for Education to make the Secretary of State for Education and Employment. In 2001 the employment functions were split off this and transferred to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions.

Previously, the responsibility for labour affairs was handled by the Postmaster General.
A 2003 reorganization saw HRDC dismantled and labour responsibilties passing to a successor department, Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, again with two ministers, a Minister of Labour and a Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.
The Minister of Labour and Housing is responsible for HRSDC's "Labour Program" and thus is responsible for the Canada Labour Code, the Employment Equity Act, the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service as well as the implementation of health and safety legislation.

Labour got two important cabinet portfolios: Shimon Peres was appointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Benjanin Ben-Eliezer was appointed as Defence Minister.
Mitzna resigned as Charirman of Labour and Shimon Peres was appointed temporary Chairman.
