Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,107 km˛ (814 mi˛). 2,097 km˛ (810 mi˛) of it is land and 10 km˛ (4 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.49% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 148,281 people, 57,996 households, and 37,581 families residing in the county. The population density is 71/km˛ (183/mi˛). There are 60,237 housing units at an average density of 29/km˛ (74/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 93.03% White, 1.51% Black or African American, 1.85% Native American, 1.01% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.04% from other races, and 1.51% from two or more races. 2.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 57,996 households out of which 33.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.80% are married couples living together, 9.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.20% are non-families. 27.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.04.


In the county, the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 10.80% from 18 to 24, 32.00% from 25 to 44, 20.00% from 45 to 64, and 11.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 98.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.40 males.
