Riots

October 4-5, 2003 played host to Homecoming celebrations at Minnesota State University, Mankato. These celebrations annually involve football games, alumni receptions, and much binge drinking by students, alumni, and visitors alike. Alcohol was the main cause of what will be remembered as a "Night of Havoc and Lawlessness" on the Saturday night of Homecoming that year. The events that took place were initially blamed as a reaction to the MSU Mavericks football game which was held that afternoon (a loss for the home team), but that is untrue because the Mavs were already well into having the worst loss in team history. The trouble started in Monks Place apartments on Monks Avenue, no more than 1/4 mile from the MSU campus. Students who had gathered began violating Mankato noise, and public alcohol consumption statutes. The initial units that responded were outnumbered by the students, dozens to one. When the crowd of students that had assembled (police estimated 2,000 individuals) was at it's maximum destructive activities, it was involved in many cases of vandalism, including igniting dumpsters of nearby apartment complexes, tearing down signs for local businesses, and even destroying a car by lighting it on fire. There were also many claims of police activities that were described as, in a best case scenario, as over-zealous and at worst brutality. Many non-lethal crowd control devices were used against the crowd that night, reports of tazers, pepper spray, and beanbag launchers have been cited. Some of the students involved reported innapropriate use of these measures. In a series of events like this, it's hard to know exactly what happened, but it's a series of events that should never have gotten this destructive, and the response should not have been so forceful
