Minnesota Territory was an organized territory of the United States from March 3, 1849 to May 11, 1858, when Minnesota was admitted as the 32nd state. The original boundaries, as carved out of Iowa Territory, included the current Minnesota region and most of the Dakotas east of the Missouri River.

Minnesota is the largest state by land area in the Midwestern United States and is in the sub-region known as the Upper Midwest.
Minnesota Territory was carved out of Iowa Territory on March 3, 1849, but it was not coextensive with the present state, since the area included what later became the territory of Dakota (which later still became the states of North Dakota and South Dakota).
Minnesota is the northernmost of the 48 contiguous states (Alaska reaches significantly farther north), reaching to 49° 23' 04" north latitude, due to a small piece of the state known as the Northwest Angle.

Henry Dodge, was territorial governor, delegate in Congress and U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, 1836-57.
Augustus Dodge was delegate to Congress for Iowa Territory, 1840-47 and U.S. Senator from Iowa, 1848-55.
Named for Willian Pitt Murray, member of the territorial legislature 1852-55 and 1857; member of the constitutional convention; state representative, 1863 and 1868; state senator, 1866-67 and 1875-76; served seventeen years on the St. Paul City Council and was St. Paul City Attorney for thirteen years.
