Minot (founded 1802) is a town located in western Androscoggin County, Maine, USA. It includes the villages of West Minot and Minot Center. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,248. Historically a farming community, Minot is gradually transitioning to the status of "bedroom suburb" of the cities of Auburn and Lewiston, Maine. Minot and surrounding towns are reknowned for their views of the White Mountains fifty miles to the northwest, including 6288 foot Mount Washington, New Hampshire, the second-highest peak east of the Mississippi River, and home to "the world's most severe weather." Martin and Moses Crafts established the Minot Shoe Company in 1835 in a portion of the town that was to become part of Auburn.
West Minot village is tucked away at the northwest edge of the community, adjacent to Hebron.
History of Minot, Maine (1265 words)
Minot, in Androscoggin County, was included with Poland and Old Auburn in the grant made by Massachusetts in 1765 to one Baker and others, and the tract was hence called Bakerstown.
Minot, as now constituted, is bounded by Hebron, in Oxford County, on the west, on the north by the same town and Turner, on the east and south-east by Auburn, and on the south and south-west by Poland.
Stephen Emery, judge of Probate in Oxford County, was a native of Minot.
