The Mirador Basin is an area of pristine tropical forest geographically defined on the west, south and east by a low range of karstic mountains and bordered on the north by the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in Mexico.
The Mirador Basin is crucial to the ecological processes that determine the survival of species requiring large area extensions for their habitat, such as the jaguar, puma, tapir, anteater, collared peccary, brocket and white-tailed deer, and, along its southern borders, the scarlet macaw (Ara macao).
Mirador Basin is home to five of the six species of cat found in Guatemala, and the largest jaguar preserve in Central America, with an estimated 500-600 jaguars living in the Basin’s dense forests.
