Miranda is the daughter of Bianca Montgomery, conceived after a brutal rape by her father, Michael Cambias. A spiteful rape to get even with Bianca's mother, Erica Kane, for not selling him her company was what led Michael to rape and impregnate Bianca. At first, Erica, fearful of what could happen with Bianca, urged her to have the child aborted, and Bianca wanted to, at first, but when her half-sister, Kendall Hart came to the clinic, and Bianca told her what had happened, Kendall was so touched, and so pleased that the sister she always scorned, understood what she went through, that she threw her full support to her. This solidified a still unbreakable bond between the two sisters. Erica found out about the pregnancy, and was furious that everyone kept her in the dark about it. She and Bianca had a vicious argument about it, and Bianca stormed out of the house.

She was born during a storm where her mother was stranded in a cabin with Babe Carey. With Babe's help, she was born. Her name was chosen because her mother loved the first name, and her middle name came from her late great-grandmother, Mona Kane Tyler. Her first few months were hectic, more so than they should have been. At first, her mother thought that she was dead, but really wasn't. For she had been swiched by devious Paul Cramer, since he had taken Babe's son, and passed it to his sister, Kelly Cramer back in Llanview. He presented Miranda to Babe and her husband at the time, JR Chandler, who promptly named her Bess, short for Elizabeth Charlotte Chandler.

For months, Bianca was led to believe that her baby had died. In fact, it was Miranda's Aunt Kendall who had to tell Bianca that she was dead. All this time, she was being raised by JR and Babe. Bianca was so shaken by this, that she almost kidnapped her daughter. JR wanted her in jail, but Babe interceded on her behalf. She even went as far as to ask Bianca to be Bess's Godmother, a situation JR resented. Babe also changed Bess's middle name to Miranda, to honor her. JR, on the other hand, wasn't so pleased, and even went so far as to hire a nanny to watch Bianca when she made a visit.

In 2004, Ethan Cambias came to town, he was Miranda's biological cousin, by virtue that Michael was Miranda's father. Ethan's father was Zach Slater who was really Alexander Cambias, Jr. He befriended Miranda's mother and aunt, and later on, a DNA test taken on both Miranda and Ethan showed that they were both indeed Cambias. After the death of Paul Cramer, things went really crazy. It was becoming increasingly evident that people saw that Bess Chandler was really Miranda. JR and Babe had split up, and Babe was growng close to his brother, Jamie Martin. It was during a benefit in Florida that the awful truth came out. Babe had asked Bianca to come to Florida and she spilled everything. Bianca was clearly livid and denounced Babe for her actions. JR, however, was more hell-bent on keeping Miranda away from Bianca. He kidnapped her, and while he and Bianca were arguing about the turn of events, she fell off a second story balcony and was injured severely.

JR, hoping against hope that he was Bess's father, had Bianca taken back to Pine Valley, where she was admitted to the hospital. She remained in a coma for several days. Erica, Miranda's grandmother, went to Adam Chandler one of her ex-husbands and demanded that he set up a DNA test to prove who Bess/Miranda was once and for all. Adam, to JR's ire, did exactly that. The results were conclusive. Bess was indeed Miranda and had been very much alive all this time.

JR wasn't going to let a stupid DNA test result stand in his way of being with his daughter. In his mind, Miranda was Bess, DNA or no DNA, he was the father, and nothing was going to stop that. One person however, did stop that. JR's stepfather, Tad Martin! Tad, along with Adam and Erica took Miranda out of JR's arms, and returned with her to the hospital. A truly depressed JR denounced everyone for what had happened. He took to drink and mourned the loss of his son and his daughter. On the other hand, a very relieved Erica took her granddaughter and brought her into Bianca's ICU room. Erica, along with Kendall; her uncle, Jackson Montgomery; her best friend, Maggie Stone; and many people who loved her, pleaded for Bianca to come out of her coma. When Erica put Miranda into her arms, it was a Christmas miracle indeed! Bianca woke up and held her beautiful baby close. Ethan, who was there when she was brought in, and met his cousin, was already forming a bond with her.

Many weeks later, Miranda, along with her mommy and her mommy's friend, Maggie, moved to Paris, where Bianca worked at Cambias Industries' European Division, where they live at present.

Since she and her cousin, Ethan, are Cambias by blood, they stand to be heirs to the Cambias fortune. Because of Miranda's age, however, Bianca votes Miranda's shares in Cambias Industries by proxy. Once she is of age, though, she will more likely as not, take her rightful place, alongside her cousin Ethan, in the Cambias Empire.
