Misawa is a small city of about 43,000 people which sits on the southern shore of picturesque Lake Ogawara.
While they don't "roll up the sidewalks" and there is some nightlife, some people assigned to Misawa may miss the bright lights and excitement of a major city; however the slower pace, friendly atmosphere and country setting are the most attractive aspects of the area.
As of 2003, the Misawa Security Operations Center (MSOC), located in the western part of MisawaAir Base, was comprised of components from the DOD, the 373rd Intelligence Group, the 403rd Military Intelligence Detachment and the Naval Security Group Activity Misawa.
Misawa is the only combined, joint service installation in the western Pacific.
Misawa also has scheduled civilian flights operated by Japan Airlines to Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) and New Chitose Airport, making it one of the few joint civilian-military airports in the U.S. defense grid.
What is now called MisawaAir Base has been used by the military since the Meiji period, when it was used as a cavalry training center for the Imperial Army.
