Encyclopedia > Miss Hong Kong

The Miss Hong Kong Pageant (香港小姐競選 or simply 港姐), or simply MHK, is a beauty pageant organised by the television station TVB. All participants must have a valid Hong Kong identity card or must be born in Hong Kong (with a valid birth certificate). The pageant has been annual event since 1973. Apart from the usual winner, first runner-up and second runner-up prizes, the pageant also has other consolation prizes that vary slightly from year to year.

Although nominally a Hong Kong pageant, the contest has also been attracting overseas Chinese contestants. In recent years, the pageant has been split into two televised events, a semi-final and a separate final show, with 20 contestants (selected from thousands through interviews) in the semi-final and 12 in the final.
