Misty of Chincoteague is the title of a 1947 book by Marguerite Henry, based on the life of a real pony named Misty, native to Virginia's coastal island of Chincoteague off of the Delmarva Peninsula. Misty was foaled in 1946, sired by a Chicoteague pony stallion named The Pied Piper. Her dam was a Chincoteague pony mare called Phantom. Misty died in 1972. Miscellany - As of 2007, on Virginia's Eastern Shore, the annual "Pony Swim" and auction continues, helping both the community and the herd of wild ponies.
- The real Misty's hoof prints are in the sidewalk outside the Roxy Movie Theatre in Chincoteague. (To locate them, turn left upon crossing the drawbridge to Chincoteague, then look right. They are clearly visible on the pavement.)
