Sayyid Mohammed, who belonged to the Ogaden sub-clan of the Darod was born in 1856 at the valley of Sa'Madeeq, in the north-west of Somalia which later became British Somaliland.
In answer to his appeal, Sayyid Mohammed attacked the Ethiopian garrison at Jijiga 5 March of that year, and successfully recovered all the looted animals.
Sayyid Mohammed gained great prestige in recovering the looted stock from the Ethiopians and he used it along with his charisma and powers of oratory to improve his undisputed authority on the Ogaden.
As Mohammed put it, Kaab had "Harmed Allah and His Apostle." At that time Kaab Ibn al-Ashraf, and his tribe were strong, so it was not easy for a stranger to infiltrate and execute the task.
Mohammed agreed and then ordered the killer to lie by stating that he was a member of the Khazaa clan.
