The Molopo River is located in southern Africa. The river generally flows to the southwest from its source, and has a length of approximately 960 kilometres. River flow is intermittent, and although it is considered part of the Orange River system, it is only when in flood that the Molopo actually joins with the Orange River.
The river provides a significant portion of the border between Botswana and South Africa.
The city of Mafikeng, South Africa, lies on the banks of the river.
To the north-east and connected with Ngami by the Botletle river, is the great Makari-Kari salt pan, which also drains a vast extent of territory, receiving in the rainy season a large volume of water.
The climate is healthy and bracing, except in the lower valleys along the river banks and in the marsh land, where malarial fever is prevalent.
That portion lying to the south of the Moloporiver was described as British Bechuanaland, and was constituted a crown colony.
