Background

Molten Core lies at the very bottom of Blackrock Depths in Azeroth. It is the heart of Blackrock Mountain and the exact spot where, long ago in a desperate bid to turn the tide of the dwarven civil war, Emperor Thaurissan summoned the elemental Firelord, Ragnaros, into the world. Though the fire lord is incapable of straying far from the blazing Core, it is believed that his elemental minions command the Dark Iron dwarves, who are in the midst of creating armies out of living stone. The burning lake where Ragnaros lies sleeping acts as a rift connecting to the plane of fire, allowing the malicious elementals to pass through. Chief among Ragnaros' agents is Majordomo Executus - for this cunning servant is the only one capable of calling the Firelord from his slumber. Nomenclature

While geographical short forms are highly varied in any MMORPG, the most common shortform referring to the Molten Core is "MC". Players interacting in Ultima Online. ...

Instance zone

Molten Core is the first tier of World of Warcraft's 40 man raid content (along with Onyxia's Lair) and is reached from a portal found in the Blackrock Mountain zone. Entry is only possible once you have performed the quest Attunement to the Core within the Blackrock Depths dungeon. It also features rocks and rivers of lava. The environment is oppressive but you can see most monsters from afar. A raid group taking on Onyxia. ... Blackrock Depths is a location set in Blizzard Entertainments video game and book series, Warcraft. ...

The maximum number of people allowed in the instance is a full raid group, 40 players. Only remarkably well-equipped and organized groups would go in with less than the maximum.

During the early days of raiding, MC players wishing to enter MC would have to clear out Blackrock Depths to the MC instance portal. Due to the instance limits put in place to prevent the trivialization of instances by larger than intended raid groups, a quest was added that gave players an alternate way of entering MC. When the quest was first added players would enter MC by jumping through the window next to the quest giver, but due to players dying while trying to enter MC without a raid group, now almost all raid groups enter MC via speaking with the NPC next to the window.

Enemies

Molten Core is populated by molten giants, Core Hounds (huge two-headed dogs), fire elementals, rock elementals, and fire imps. The monsters are all level 61 to 63 elites, though the level is almost meaningless here. A single monster can easily defeat 40 players if they don't know what they are doing. Each monster has vast attack power and huge numbers of hit points. The mythology and legends of many different cultures include mythological creatures of human appearance but prodigious size and strength. ... IMP may be a word: Imp, a fantasy creature. ...

The boss monsters each have special abilities and hundreds of thousands of hit points. Defeating the boss monsters can take five to ten minutes of continuous attack, and require unique tactics for dealing with each mob, each raid group generally develops their own version of the tactics which suits their raid groups makeup and skill level. Each boss monster will reward victors with two or three (or in the case of Ragnaros, four or five) epic items. With the addition of Blackwing Lair, The Temple of Ahn'Qiraj, and Naxxramas, the epic item drops in MC are no longer the best in the game, but still are among the very high-end items. Victory over even one boss is a real achievement and is not possible without a well prepared, well organized, well balanced group of 38 to 40 players. Victory is a test of team-work, skill, and some degree of sacrifice. During the average night of clearing MC, most players will suffer durability losses which result in repair bills in excess of 2-10 gold per player depending on class. Attunement to the Core

A quest entitled Attunement to the Core is available from a blood elf at the entrance to the Grinding Quarry in Blackrock Mountain. To complete this quest the player must fight their way through the Blackrock Depths instance until they reach the true entrance to the Molten Core. There is a core fragment near the portal that must be returned to the blood elf. The reward for this is a much easier entrance to Molten Core via the unstable rift crystal on the blood elf's right.
