Merafhe was speaking at the annual diplomatic reception, which he described as "a symbol of goodwill and friendship" between Botswana and the numerous countries and international organisations represented here.
He took the opportunity to remind his audience that their primary responsibility was to promote international goodwill and understanding, and urged them to therefore acquaint themselves with the history and culture of the people of their host countries.
Merafhe observed that there had been a growth in the number of resident diplomatic missions, as well as in the number of envoys accredited to Botswana, in recent years; these positive developments were a tribute to Botswana and a demonstration of a growing level of respect for the country by the international community.

BNOC spokesperson Andrew Kamanga said the board decided to submit Merafhe's name because of the contribution that he has made towards the development of sport.
When reached for comment, Merafhe, who is also the MP for Mahalapye West was delighted that his contribution to sport has finally been recognised.
