Constitutional monarchy in Alberta

Under the Canadian constitutional monarchy system the headship of state is not a part of either the federal or provincial jurisdictions; the Queen reigns impartially over the country as a whole, meaning the sovereignty of the provinces is passed on not by the Governor General or the Canadian Parliament, but through the Crown itself. Thus, Alberta has a separate government headed by the Queen; in legal nomenclature she is referred to as the Queen in Right of Alberta, to differentiate from the Queen in Right of Canada, though they are the same person. Alberta, however, as a province, is not itself a monarchy; it is under the sovereignty of the Canadian Crown. At the time of Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee in 2002, the Government of Alberta introduced a number of events and initiatives for the occasion. Flowerbeds planted with flowers that matched the colours in the Queen's official jubilee logo were planted on the South Legislature Grounds, and at Government House in Edmonton, as well as at McDougall Centre in Calgary, and a commemorative plaque was placed at each location for the occasion.
