Encyclopedia > Monbetsu Airport

Monbetsu Airport (IATA code MBE), also known as Okhotsk-Monbetsu Airport, is an airport in Monbetsu, Hokkaido, Japan. It is a third class airport.

MBE is the newest airport in Hokkaido: it opened on July 21, 1966. The airport was originally used for general aviation flights. Scheduled passenger service began after a runway extension in 1999 allowed the airport to accommodate jets. Air Nippon inaugurated daily service to New Chitose Airport outside Sapporo that year, and added flights to Tokyo International Airport in 2000. The Sapporo service was moved to Okadama Airport in 2001 and discontinued entirely in 2003. Monbetsu now has only one daily flight to Tokyo, operated by All Nippon Airways.

The airport is 15 minutes from the city center and accessible by bus from the Monbetsu Bus Terminal.

Monbetsu, Hokkaido - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (333 words)
Monbetsu (紋別市; -shi) is a city located in Abashiri, Hokkaido, Japan, on the Sea of Okhotsk.
Most of Monbetsu's economy is dedicated to fishing for cold-water species such as crab.
The crab from Monbetsu is reputably the best in Japan, and is such a source of town pride that a sculpture of a crab claw nearly 10m tall was built down by the waterfront.
List of airports in Japan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (349 words)
In Japan, airports are grouped into three legal classifications.
For instance, following the ANA flight 61 hijacking in July of 1999, the family of a killed pilot were able to sue the Japanese government for compensation because Haneda was classified as a first class airport.
Many third-class airports are small airstrips serving isolated islands of the archipelago.
