Monica Ali, 35, lives in south London with her husband Simon, a management consultant, and their two children, aged four and two.
Instead, saying that Ali was keen to be seen as a writer first and a woman and 'coloured person' second, the publicist suggested the paper use an alternative writer, who, unlike Jaggi, was neither female nor Asian.
