In biochemistry, monoamines are a group of organic compounds containing only one amino group. The first three neurotransmitters that comprise the monoamine group are a sub-group called catecholamines they are dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine. The fourth is serotonin or 5-HT, an indoleamine. Several mood disorders are explained as due to either an excess or deficiency of monoamines.
