Monroe County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of James Monroe, fifth President of the United States. As of 2000 the population was 24,324. Its county seat is Monroeville.

History

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,679 km˛ (1,035 mi˛). 2,657 km˛ (1,026 mi˛) of it is land and 22 km˛ (9 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.84% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 24,324 people, 9,383 households, and 6,774 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km˛ (24/mi˛). There are 11,343 housing units at an average density of 4/km˛ (11/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 57.75% White, 40.07% Black or African American, 0.97% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 0.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 9,383 households out of which 35.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.30% are married couples living together, 16.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.80% are non-families. 25.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.09.


In the county the population is spread out with 28.30% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 22.50% from 45 to 64, and 13.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 90.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.40 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $29,093, and the median income for a family is $34,569. Males have a median income of $31,096 versus $18,767 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,862. 21.30% of the population and 18.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.00% of those under the age of 18 and 21.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
