Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,185 km˛ (457 mi˛). 1,180 km˛ (456 mi˛) of it is land and 5 km˛ (2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.42% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 15,180 people, 6,021 households, and 4,413 families residing in the county. The population density is 13/km˛ (33/mi˛). There are 7,212 housing units at an average density of 6/km˛ (16/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 98.72% White, 0.26% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. 0.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 6,021 households out of which 29.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.70% are married couples living together, 8.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.70% are non-families. 24.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.96.


In the county, the population is spread out with 23.60% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 25.90% from 25 to 44, 27.20% from 45 to 64, and 16.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 97.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.10 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $30,467, and the median income for a family is $36,297. Males have a median income of $33,308 versus $19,628 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,096. 13.90% of the population and 11.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.30% of those under the age of 18 and 11.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Monroe County is a county located in the state of Ohio.
In the county, the population is spread out with 23.60% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 25.90% from 25 to 44, 27.20% from 45 to 64, and 16.30% who are 65 years of age or older.
Elections are administered in each county by a four-member board of elections which consists of two Republicans and two Democrats appointed by the Ohio Secretary of State at the recommendation of each county party.
