Monsey is a hamlet (and also a census-designated place) located in Rockland County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 14,504. It has an extremely large and influential Orthodox Judaism, particularly Haredi Judaism, community with many yeshivas and Hasidic rebbes and their communities in it.


Monsey is in the Town of Ramapo.


Geography

Monsey is located at 41°7'10" North, 74°3'57" West (41.119497, -74.065966)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.8 km˛ (2.2 mi˛). 5.7 km˛ (2.2 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.90% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,504 people, 2,981 households, and 2,596 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 2,533.9/km˛ (6,554.3/mi˛). There are 3,098 housing units at an average density of 541.2/km˛ (1,400.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 92.82% White, 4.32% African American, 0.03% Native American, 1.05% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.70% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. 2.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,981 households out of which 58.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 78.0% are married couples living together, 6.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 12.9% are non-families. 10.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.74 and the average family size is 5.16.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 48.6% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 18.2% from 25 to 44, 16.3% from 45 to 64, and 6.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 19 years. For every 100 females there are 106.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.6 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $45,194, and the median income for a family is $45,911. Males have a median income of $41,606 versus $33,576 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $14,000. 30.6% of the population and 25.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 37.8% of those under the age of 18 and 9.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
