Monterey is a town located in Highland County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 158. It is the county seat of Highland County6.


Geography

Monterey is located at 38°24'43" North, 79°34'50" West (38.411888, -79.580468)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.8 km˛ (0.3 mi˛). 0.8 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 158 people, 90 households, and 44 families residing in the town. The population density is 196.8/km˛ (512.2/mi˛). There are 141 housing units at an average density of 175.6/km˛ (457.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.47% White, 0.00% African American, 1.27% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. 1.27% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 90 households out of which 16.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.6% are married couples living together, 10.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 51.1% are non-families. 48.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 22.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.76 and the average family size is 2.48.


In the town the population is spread out with 14.6% under the age of 18, 1.3% from 18 to 24, 17.1% from 25 to 44, 36.1% from 45 to 64, and 31.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 53 years. For every 100 females there are 69.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 64.6 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $36,786, and the median income for a family is $45,625. Males have a median income of $36,250 versus $16,625 for females. The per capita income for the town is $26,379. 3.5% of the population and 0.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 4.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
