Montgomery County is a county in the State of Alabama. It was named in honor of Lemuel P. Montgomery, a military officer killed at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in the War of 1812. (Note that its county seat, Montgomery, Alabama (which is also the state capital), has a different origin for its name, being named for Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada.) As of 2000 its population was 223,510.

History

Montgomery County was established on December 6, 1816.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,071 km² (800 mi²). 2,045 km² (790 mi²) of it is land and 26 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.25% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 223,510 people, 86,068 households, and 56,804 families residing in the county. The population density is 109/km² (283/mi²). There are 95,437 housing units at an average density of 47/km² (121/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 48.85% White, 48.58% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.99% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 1.19% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 86,068 households out of which 32.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.80% are married couples living together, 18.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.00% are non-families. 29.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.80% under the age of 18, 11.70% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 20.90% from 45 to 64, and 11.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 90.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,962, and the median income for a family is $44,669. Males have a median income of $32,018 versus $24,921 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,358. 17.30% of the population and 13.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.10% of those under the age of 18 and 13.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
