Monticello is a city located in Jasper County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,428. The city is the county seat of Jasper County6.


Geography

Monticello is located at 33°18'12" North, 83°41'9" West (33.303247, -83.685766)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.9 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.66% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,428 people, 927 households, and 609 families residing in the city. The population density is 311.4/km² (805.8/mi²). There are 1,006 housing units at an average density of 129.0/km² (333.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 44.77% White, 53.50% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.70% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. 3.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 927 households out of which 33.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.0% are married couples living together, 22.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% are non-families. 31.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.21.


In the city the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 79.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 73.1 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $35,058, and the median income for a family is $46,705. Males have a median income of $30,565 versus $21,793 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,743. 21.4% of the population and 16.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.6% of those under the age of 18 and 20.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
