Monticello is a village located in Lewis County, Missouri. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 126. It is the county seat of Lewis County6.

Monticello is located at 40°7'4" North, 91°42'51" West (40.117841, -91.714152)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 km˛ (0.3 mi˛). 0.7 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 126 people, 51 households, and 31 families residing in the village. The population density is 187.1/km˛ (481.5/mi˛). There are 58 housing units at an average density of 86.1/km˛ (221.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 98.41% White, 0.79% African American, 0.79% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 51 households out of which 29.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% are married couples living together, 9.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.3% are non-families. 37.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 3.00.


In the village the population is spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 113.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 125.6 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $25,625, and the median income for a family is $26,875. Males have a median income of $28,750 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the village is $16,592. 11.8% of the population and 13.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.5% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

She was born April 3, 1774 at Monticello and died there in September of the next year; and although it seems probable that she would have been buried in the new graveyard, this is not known with certainty.
During this period Monticello was in the hand of a tenant who "lived there for so long that he became convinced that the place was his own." and who did little for the property beyond machine his livestock as well as his family at home in the mansion.
Also the Board of Curators of the University of Missouri adopted a formal resolution of thanks to the donors of the monument and sent to them a copy of their resolution printed on a silken scroll, which is now in the possession of Miss Olivia Taylor, Historian of the Monticello Association.
