Montrose is the debut album by the band Montrose in 1973. After having done sessions work for various musicians including Van Morrison, Herbie Hancock and Edgar Winter, this was Ronnie Montrose's first record leading his own band. It featured then little known Sammy Hagar on vocals. It also had future Van Halen producer Ted Templeman and future Van Halen engineer Don Landee producing and engineering the record repectively. While considered a classic by many hard rock fans, tracks from the album have received scant airplay on the radio with "Bad Motor Scooter" being the only possible exception. Van Halen had used this album as a blueprint for their own debut and some of the similarities in sound are striking. Eddie Van Halen himself considered Ronnie Montrose to be an influence. Paper Money: 11/18/02 (570 words)
Montrose the musician has always been about pushing the envelope and exploring the unexplored.
Where Montrose remains rightly famous for its unrelenting eight-song hard rock assault, Paper Money is all over the map, delving into quirky, melodic pop, a pair of ballads and an instrumental.
Having created a certain set of expectations with the first album, Montrose proceeded to dash them immediately by opening their sophomore effort with "Underground," a blatantly poppy outside composition whose vaguely macabre lyric seems to puzzle even lead vocalist Sammy Hagar.
