The school was founded in the 1960s as Montserrat School of Visual Arts. It was accredited as a college in the 1980s at which time it changed to its current name. In 1990 the school moved to it's current location off of Cabot Street in the Hardie Building, a renovated 19th century school building that serves as the center of the campus. Currently, the campus includes residence halls, the Cabot Studio Building, and the Cabot Street Illustration Studios. The school values its small size, which allows more academic attention to the progress of each individual. Montserrat typically has an active student body of around 350 students.
