Moodiesburn is split into various areas, defined by when the homes which stand on the land were built. To the western side of Stoneyetts road there is "Old Moodiesburn". These houses were built circa the 1950's by the local authorities in the area. Many families who live in this area have done so for generations and it is not uncommon for members of the same families to stay within a couple of minutes walk from eachother. Also present are Miners Houses. These are brick houses covered with timber panelling and painted either brown or black. These houses were built in unusual looking shapes and styles in some cases and look deceptively small from the outside. In the northern west corner of the village stands an estate of houses known as the Bellway by locals - the name originating from the contactors who built the properties there in the mid 1990s. East of this estate is the area known as Spam Valley. Built in the mid 1970s by Salvesen Homes, these houses were constructed with the intention of bringing in middle class professionals to the area. Until then the area had been mainly associated with being a mining community. Unfortunately, due to the demise in the coal industry in the UK as a whole, these homes were made to inject some fresh life into the suffering community.

Unfortunately, due to many of the people moving into these houses being "outsiders", as opposed to having been born and raised in Moodiesburn, tensions mounted and allegedly local men would beat up the newcomers outside the Silver Larch pub.

The Spam Valley is a name given to these houses in this estate by the locals of the time (1970s) and is still used, albeit in a jocular fashion by many inhabitants of the village. Its meaning is unclear although it is said to mean that the people who lived in these houses were so financially crippled by their mortgages that they could only afford to eat the potted meat portrayed in the name. This vast area is found on both sides of the Stoneyetts road, which disects the village. Many of streets in this estate are also named after Cornish towns and villages, eg. St Ives Road, Penzance Way and Truro Avenue, but to name a few. It is also interesting to note the socio-economic changes portrayed in this area of Moodiesburn. The middle class professionals of the area have since moved on and the houses are now inhabited by hardworking upper working class families. However, many families in these areas posses between two and five cars.

To the east of the Spam Valley is an estate of yellow brick houses built within the last twenty years known as the Tay. Again, like the Bellway, its name stems from the contractor company who built the houses.

To the south of these is The Electric Scheme. Within this scheme stands St Michael's RC Primary School. The name of this area comes from the idea that these were either the first houses in Moodiesburn to be built with electrc powering - as opposed to coal fires and gas - or that they stand on the site of an old electricity generator. Considered to be one of the more deprived areas in Moodiesburn, new homes similar in style to those found in the Bellway and Tay estates were built in 2002 to help improve the image of that area.

To the east of the expansive Electric Scheme and Tay and south of the eastern-most tip of the Spam valley a new area of Moodiesburn appeared in 2006. This part of Moodiesburn is still under construction and is home to aspriring families hailing from both Old Moodiesburn areas and the Spam Valley as well as people moving in from other areas.

Like many places in the area it was once a mining village.
