The Mool Mantar (Punjabi: ਮੂਲ ਮੰਤਰ, Mūl Maṃtar, Mool Mantra) is the most important composition contained within the Guru Granth Sahib; it is the basis of Sikhism. Its importance is emphasised by the fact that it is the first composition to appear in the Granth and that it appears before the commencement of most of the Raags within the Granth. The Mool Mantar is said to be the first composition uttered by Guru Nanak upon enlightenment at the age of 30. Being the basis of Sikhism it encapsulate the entire theology of Sikhism, and as a result, it is also the most difficult composition to fully understand. The proceeding Japji Sahib and the rest of the Guru Granth Sahib totalling 1430 pages, are efforts to explain that which is contained within the Mool Mantar. Guru Nanak (Gurmukhi: ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ, Devanagari: गुरु नानक) (20 October 1469 - 7 May 1539), the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Gurus of the Sikhs, was born in the village of Talwandi, now called Nankana Sahib, near Lahore in present-day Pakistan. ... Punjabi: ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
Transliteration: Ik ōaṅkār sat nām karatā purakh nirabha'u niravair akāl mūrat ajūnī saibhaṁ gur prasād |
English: One Universal Creator God. The Name Is Truth. Creative Being Personified. No Fear. No Hatred. Image Of The Undying, Beyond Birth, Self-Existent. By Guru's Grace ~

In the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the Panj Pyare are to make all the Singhs and Singhni’s stand and collectively repeat the Mool Mantar five times, investing all its spiritual powers into the candidates.
In the same manner, Vaheguru (Gurmantar) is to be repeated five times and in the same way all its powers become invested in the individual, by repeating it in the presence of Guru Sahib.
