Encyclopedia > Moon, Pennsylvania

Moon Township is a township located along the Ohio River in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. It is believed to be named after a cresent shaped bend in the nearby river. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 22,290. It is home to Robert Morris University. The township is located 15 miles west of Pittsburgh, PA and is one of Pittsburgh's major suburban centers, developed mainly due to its proximity to the Pittsburgh International Airport. In 1991 the relocation of the Pittsburgh International Airport to nearby Findlay caused a big loss to the township. Development success can also be credited to major corporations headquarters in Moon like Dick's Sporting Goods, Nova Chemicals, some departments of Aquafresh and GlaxoSmithKline, and FedEx Ground. Robert Morris University also feeds the economy of the town's University Blvd neighborhood. The town will grow rapidly within the next few years due to many new construction projects such as the redevelopment of University Blvd and West Hills Shopping District.
