The lake, being glacially fed, does not reach its crest until mid to late June. However, when it is full, it is a beautiful shade of blue. The lake gets its color from the Refraction of light off the Rock_flour deposited in the lake on a continual basis. The straw seems to be broken, due to refraction of light as it emerges into the air. ... Rock flour consists of clay sized particles of rock generated by glacial erosional actions. ...

The area around the lake has several walking/hiking trails, which are from time to time, restricted because of grizzly bear activity. For the sake of the bears, do not ever break the Group Access Restrictions. Check with Parks Canada for current trail conditions and/or restrictions. Trinomial name Ursus arctos horribilis (Ord, 1815) The Grizzly Bear, sometimes called the Silvertip Bear, has traditionally been treated as a subspecies, Ursus arctos horribilis, of the brown bear living in North America. ...

The easiest of the hiking trails is the one most commonly taken by tourists. The Rockpile Trail is approximately 300m long, with an elevation change of 24m (79 ft). The view of the lake from the top of the rockpile is apparently one of the most photographed locations in all of Canada.

Along the same trailhead, you can find the start of the Consolation Lakes trail, which is approximately 3km (2 miles) long, with an elevation change of 90 m (295 ft). When you reach Consolation Lakes you may end your journey there, or continue along to the upper lake, which is not visible from the end of the lower lake. There is, however, no clearly marked trail, and can often be a scramble over large rocky areas.

Near the canoe docks of Moraine Lake Lodge there is another trailhead. This trailhead is the start of two trails, one of which branches out into four different trails - so there are in total, five trails starting at that trailhead.

They are, the Moraine Lake Lakeshore Trail, Eiffel Lake, Wenkchemna Pass, Larch Valley, and Sentinel Pass. For information on these trails, if you plan to hike them, check the Lake Louise & Yoho Map offered by GemTrek, or ask any of the friendly lodge staff.
