Mormon is the name of the prophet in The Book of Mormon after whom the book is named. According to the Introduction and the account of Joseph Smith, Jr. (the book's translator), Mormon was the prophet-historian who engraved the book on Golden Plates. Many Latter Day Saints believe Mormon was a Nephite prophet who lived in the Americas during the 4th century AD. With few exceptions, non-adherants to the Latter Day Saint Movement disregard Mormon as fictitious. According to Mormon's record in the Book of Mormon,[1] he was born in about 311 A.D. and was named after his father. Prophet David O. McKay says that: "The appearing of the Father and the Son to Joseph Smith is the foundation of this church."(4) I find it ludicrous that so many would place their faith on such a shaky foundation.
Mormon doctrine is primarily received by the Prophet of the church.
Those outside the Mormon Church see the good works of its members and because of their lack of understanding of Christian teaching and their acute lack of knowledge regarding Mormon sources, they tend to think that the Mormon church is as Christian as the Baptists, Methodists and the Presbyterians.
