Encyclopedia > Mortal Kombat: Deception

Mortal Kombat: Deception is the latest game in the controversial and bloody Mortal Kombat video game series by Midway.

Contents

New characters

MK:D introduces Ashrah (a demon searching for redemption), Dairou (Hotaru's subordinate and would-be assassin), Darrius (Resistance leader in Seidou), Havik (a cleric of Chaos), Hotaru (warrior of Order, pledged to serve the Dragon King), Kira (a Black Dragon recruit), Kobra (another Black Dragon recruit), Onaga (the Dragon King and former ruler of Outworld), and Shujinko (an old warrior and champion of the Elder Gods).

Returning characters

Baraka, Bo' Rai Cho, Ermac, Jade, Kabal, Kenshi, Li Mei, Liu Kang, Nightwolf, Raiden, Mileena, Noob Saibot, Scorpion, Sindel, Smoke, Sub-Zero, and Tanya. Tanya is the first MK4-specific character to return to the series. Reptile technically returns as Onaga.

New to the series

  • MK:D's stages are fully interactive, with multiple levels, breakable boundaries, and instant-death traps.
  • MK:D's characters have two Fatalities and a Hara Kiri suicide move.
  • MK:D's Konquest Mode allows the player to play Shujinko in an RPG-style format.
  • MK:D's Krypt is smaller than Deadly Alliance's (400 Koffins as opposed to 676).
  • MK:D adds Chess Kombat and Puzzle Kombat game modes. Chess Kombat is similar to classical chess, but uses player-selected characters as pieces, and pieces must engage in Kombat to take a piece. Puzzle Kombat is reminiscient of Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, a Street Fighter puzzle game.
  • MK:D continues the dark theme, starting off with a whimper for the forces of good and getting worse.

Storyline

Raiden's warriors (Kitana, Kung Lao, Jax, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade) lay defeated before the Deadly Alliance, so Raiden must fight them alone. He has the upper hand for most of the fight, but Shang Tsung absorbs souls from the Soulnado and knocks him down. With Raiden defeated, Shang Tsung and Quan Chi turn on each other. When Quan Chi stands alone, a hulking form enters the tomb, and the mummies of the Dragon King's army turn and kneel. Onaga has returned.

Quan Chi cannot defeat him, even with Shang Tsung and Raiden at his side. Raiden concentrates his essence into a single blast, which obliterates the army, Quan Chi, Shang Tsung, the tomb, and himself, but Onaga is unharmed.

Mortal Kombat: Deception follows Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance.

GameSpy: Mortal Kombat: Deception Review (523 words)
The Mortal Kombat series is possessed by an odd sort of charm that probably has a lot to do with nostalgia.
Mortal Kombat: Deception is the latest of the "new generation" of MK games, and just like its predecessor, it's built around all the things that made the series so memorable in the first place.
In this manner, Mortal Kombat: Deception both exhibits the kind of depth that modern fighting games require for them to be taken seriously, as well as rewards serious players with hard-hitting, efficient tools.
