Plants are able to perceive the levels of nutrient availability in their root vicinity and to cope by responding more or less rapidly by developing different strategies.
The significance of atmospheric sulfur deposition in sulfur nutrition of plants largely depends on the atmospheric concentration of the sulfur gas, the duration of the exposure, the efficiency of utilization of the atmospheric sulfur, the pedospheric sulfur supply and the sulfur demand for plant growth, the latter strongly varies between species.
Exposure of plants to atmospheric sulfur gases may reduce the sulfate uptake by the roots and its transport to the shoots, in addition it may result in a repression of the activity of the enzymes of the assimilatory sulfur reduction pathway.
