The Moscow Zoo was founded in 1864 by professor-biologists of MSU K.F.Rulje, S.A.Usov and A.P.Bogdanov, in 1919 was nationalized and since 1922 belong to city. At first the zoo had territory 10 hectares with 4 twigs and 286 animals. In 1926 the territory was widened about 18 hectares. The buildings were wooden with cut in russian style. In 1990 began renovating by architect A.A.Andreev. It was builded new bridge over Bolschaja Gruzinskaja street between New and Old territories of zoo with many beautiful animals sculptures, new entrance in rock style and many new buildings. New pavilions were opened: pavilion with sea aquariums, bird house, "night world", house of Pinniped. Specially for children was opened "children zoo".

Now zoo collection has 6094 animals from 1003 species.

Territory of the Zoo – 21.47 hectares.

The zoo studies animals behaviour, feeding and reproduction and breeds rare endangered species.
