Mosgiel (population 9,500) is a suburb of Dunedin in Otago, New Zealand, located 15 kilometres southwest of the city centre. It has been a suburb since local council reorganisation in the late 1980s, although occasionally it is referred to as a separate town. It stands at the northeastern extremity of the Taieri Plains, and the Silver Stream, a tributary of the Taieri River, runs through the north end of the suburb. Mosgiel takes its name after Mossgiel in Ayrshire, the farm of poet Robert Burns, who was the uncle of the co-founder of the Otago settlement, Thomas Burns.
