Encyclopedia > Motor Coach Industries

Motor Coach Industries International Inc. (MCI) is a Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada-based bus manufacturer. The company was incorporated in 1932 as Fort Garry Motor Body and Paint Works Limited. In 1948 Greyhound Lines of Canada, at that time MCI's major customer, became a majority shareholder. MCI was purchased outright by Greyhound Lines in 1958. In 1962 a new plant was opened in Pembina, North Dakota to increase capacity as Greyhound widened its markets and switched increasingly from GMC to its own in-house products. In 1974 another plant was opened in Roswell, New Mexico under the title Transportation Manufacturing Corporation. The buses, especially the older MC-8 and workhorse MC-9 models of the 1980's became the standard for interstate travel for many bus companies. Those particular buses featured metal frames and roof supports, metal panels on the sides and were extremely durable and reliable. Many of the buses have survived millions of miles of commercial use to be later used as church buses, RV's, and other uses.

Past

  • D4000 (renamed D4000CL, see above)
  • D4000N (96" wide "narrow" model, prototyped for New Jersey Transit. Approximately 4 units produced)
  • D4500 (renamed D4500CL, see above)
  • F3500

In these model designations below, the "102" and "96" refer to the coach body width. The last number, either 2 or 3, represent the number of axles on the coach.

  • 102-DWA3 CNG (only ordered by New Jersey Transit)
  • 102DL3
  • 102D3
  • 102C3
  • 102B3

The above four models were available with optional stainless steel panels (1989-) and nosecaps (1992-) with the suffix -SS after the model.

  • 102A3
  • 102A2
  • 96A3
  • 96A2
  • MC-12 (hybrid of the 96A3 and the MC-9)

MCI previously used an ascending numbering scheme to designate these coach models:

  • MC-9, nicknamed "Crusader II" (Probably the most popular and enduring MCI model, some of these models notably NJ Transit models were built with bi-fold transit style doors and caps on the front roof containing the bus' destination sign. Some two-axle versions were also built.): Made by Greyhound (MCI) (TMC) for anyone who wanted to buy one. Nice automatic 40 foot bus with 8V-71 or 6V-92 engine. Roof was approximately the same height from front to rear, unlike the MC-8 which had a 6 inch kick up in the roof about 4 feet back. The MC-8 had some sort of big problem, so it was not made for too long, but the MC-9 was made for a long time(approx. 1979-1985). Some would say that the MC-12 is only an MC-9 with square headlights and a cage for the driver.
  • MC-8, nicknamed "Crusader" (Pre-1978 coaches had a slanted side pillar between the window panels): Built from 1974-1978.
  • MC-7: Made for Greyhound. 40 feet long. 96" wide. Two axles with tag axles mounted behind the main drive axle. 8 wheels total. Nicknamed "Challenger". V8-71 with a stick that shifted beautifully. The bus didn't have V12 power, but it would really run down the road! Later, a few were released with automatics. The first automatics shifted very roughly, like a garbage truck. Built from 1968-1974.
  • MC-6 (MCI's first endeavor with the 102" wide bus): Made for Greyhound. Only 100 made and not approved in every state since they were 102 inches wide. Most easily identified by the destination sign located UNDER the front window and the scenic color photograph located on the inside of the main door. Originally released with a V12turbo and a stick, so they were real strong runners. Later they were rebuilt with V8s and automatics and pretty red, white & blue color schemes. The Scenicruisers(made originally by GM) were also rebuilt with V8s, automatics and the same patriotic color schemes.
  • MC-5 (A,B,& C): Made for Greyhound. 35 feet long with only 2 axles. Called the "Challenger" but called the Rattler by some drivers since the windows rattled loudly on rough roads. Had a large metal support that replaced a window about half way back on each side that thoroughly blocked the view to the side for 2 or 4 passengers. The restroom was only a one holer. It had no flush mechanism. Years later, many MC5s were fitted with false front caps to make the front top portion of the bus resemble a MC9.
  • TC40-102N "Classic" (Bought from General Motors Diesel Division in 1987, sold to NovaBus in 1993)
  • TC40-102A
  • TC60-102N Articulated "Classic": Only 16 Articulated Classics were ever produced and sold: 2 were sold to the STCUQ in Quebec, and the other 14 were sold to Metro Transit in Halifax, N.S. However, production of the "Classic" transit bus was taken over by NovaBUS before this order was completed, therefore #701-707 bear the MCI logo, while 708-714 bear the NovaBUS logo.
