The Mount Hope Bridge connects Portsmouth, Rhode Island to its neighbor, Bristol, which lies across the Sakonnet River. Formerly a toll bridge, the Mount Hope Bridge became free when it was determined that the cost of operating the toll booths was greater than the revenue they generated.
The MountHopeBridge is a two-lane suspension bridge spanning the MountHope Bay in eastern Rhode Island.
The MountHopeBridge was constructed in 1927–1929 by Robinson and Steinman at a cost of US$5,000,000, and was owned by the MountHopeBridge Company as a private toll bridge until 1955, when it was purchased by the State of Rhode Island.
In 1971, the MountHopeBridge was considered for inclusion as part of the never-built Interstate 895.
