The college is particularly known for its fashion product development, fashion merchandise management, interior design, art therapy, justice, and nursing programs. Mount Mary originated as St. Mary's Institute, a secondary school for girls, founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, in 1872. The school's mission was extended to post-secondary education in 1913, when it was rechartered as St. Mary's College. The college moved to an eighty-acre site in Milwaukee in 1929 to allow more women the opportunity to enroll, and was renamed Mount Mary College at that time.
