Mount Meru is a sacredmountain in Hindu mythology which is believed to be the abode of Brahma and other gods. It is believed the mountain is 80,000 leagues (450,000 km) high.
Mount Meru is said to be located at the centre of the earth in Jambu dweepa, one of the continents on earth in Hindu mythology. Legends say that Mount Meru and the wind god Vayu were good friends. However, the sageNarad approached Vayu and incited him to humble the mountain. Vayu blew with full force for one full year, but Meru did not submit. However, after a year Meru took respite for some time. Taking advantage of this opportunity, Vayu increased its force. Thus apex of the mountain was broken and it fell into the sea and created the modern day island country of Sri Lanka.
MountMeru, situated east of the Great Rift Valley and about 40 km southwest of Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania's Arusha National Park, is considered an active volcano and is the country's second highest mountain.
Before MountMeru was included in Arusha National Park in 1967 it was also possible to reach the summit via the North and West Slopes, however, use of these trails to enter the park (and reach the summit) is now illegal.
