Mount Pleasant is a city located in Titus County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 13,935. It is the county seat of Titus County6, and is situated in East Texas.

Mount Pleasant is located at 33°9'28" North, 94°58'12" West (33.157891, -94.970084)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 33.0 km² (12.7 mi²). 32.5 km² (12.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.57% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 13,935 people, 4,558 households, and 3,208 families residing in the city. The population density is 429.4/km² (1,112.0/mi²). There are 5,029 housing units at an average density of 155.0/km² (401.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 56.70% White, 16.00% African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.84% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 23.57% from other races, and 2.33% from two or more races. 40.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 4,558 households out of which 39.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.9% are married couples living together, 14.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.6% are non-families. 26.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.93 and the average family size is 3.55.


In the city the population is spread out with 31.2% under the age of 18, 10.9% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 16.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.6 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $28,805, and the median income for a family is $32,331. Males have a median income of $22,629 versus $17,080 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,190. 22.8% of the population and 20.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 30.7% of those under the age of 18 and 16.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
